This was a very insightful post. The quote from Faramir is such a great one, too!

We have been visiting your site for quite some time now and your posts are extremely good. We have enjoyed reading them very much.

With you on the Quest,

War is like surgery, while necessary only sociopath enjoys cutting on living flesh. David did not fight Goliath because he liked fighting, but because God was being dishonored.

As is usual, it comes down to the attitude of the heart and one's perspective. I am writing a fictional series on Moses and I have these words from the mouth of Ramses to Moses on the night following the battle of Kadesh.

"Do not glory in war or battle, but take glory in what we defend, take glory in the defeat of the destroyer who would lay waste to that which we protect. No, we glory not in war but in Egypt and in her Pharaoh who is Egypt before the gods. We glory in courage and stout hearts tested by blood and death and in those who stand against fear and evil, but glory in war? May the gods forbid it. War is a malevolent master. It is a disease upon the land, devouring all that is good and noble, leaving only weeping and destruction in its wake. Even the victors are diminished, if only they could see it. No, only a fool glories in war."

Jeanne:

If you have not read FG, it's a must for Christian lovers of Middle-earth. Dickerson's insights are remarkable - I didn't even mention his exploration of Éowyn in this chapter - and his familiarity with The Silmarillion is wonderful.

His work is, page for page, as good as anything I've read on Tolkien and superior to most.

Faramir is a remarkable character. Tolkien declared himself to be a hobbit, but in his letters sounds more like Faramir - with a glint of Boromir now and then. He's not quite Aragorn - scars left by his father are apparent - but he is a wonderful figure to which one might aspire.

what a fascinating analysis of his literary treatment of each battle and of Tolkien's own feelings about war.

And a great quote from Faramir--he's always my favorite!
